An eyelash extension is a single fine lash bonded to one of your own natural lashes, just above the skin, never to the eyelid. Each extension is isolated so your lashes can still grow and shed on their own. Because every lash is placed by hand, a full set takes a couple of hours, and you lie back with your eyes closed the whole time.

Your natural lashes grow and fall out in a continuous cycle, a few every day. The extension falls with the lash it is attached to, which is why a set thins gradually rather than all at once — and why a fill every two to three weeks keeps it looking full.

Classic, hybrid or volume: which set suits you

• Classic — one extension on each natural lash. Longer, darker and more defined, like mascara that does not come off. A good first set, and kind to fine natural lashes.
• Hybrid — a mix of single extensions and light, hand-made fans. More fullness and texture than classic, still soft.
• Volume — several ultra-fine extensions fanned onto each natural lash. The fullest, darkest line, for clients who want a bolder look or whose own lashes are sparse.

Fills, aftercare and keeping your natural lashes healthy

A fill replaces the extensions that have shed with your natural lashes. Most clients come in every two to three weeks; leave it much longer and so many have shed that a new full set makes more sense.

• Keep the lashes dry and away from steam for the first day while the bond settles.
• Use oil-free cleansers and makeup removers around the eyes — oil weakens the bond.
• Brush the lashes gently each morning with a clean spoolie, and do not rub or pull at them.
• Skip mascara and lash curlers; the extensions do that job.
